How to install Ubuntu on Oracle VirtualBox
Oracle VirtualBox is a cross-platform virtualization engine. You can install and any operating system inside your currently running operating system. Whether you are using Windows, MAC OS, or Linux you can always install any other operating system on top of it.
Go to the official website of Oracle VirtualBox and download the latest suitable version according to you computer, and then install it.
Download the ISO image of Ubuntu from here.
When downloading Ubuntu ISO file, make sure to select 64-bit version.
Okay, So now let’s begin with creating a virtual machine. A virtual machine is just like a real machine except that it doesn’t physically exists.
Click ‘New‘ button to open a dialog.
Enter the name for new virtual machine. Since we are going to install Ubuntu 14.04, let’s name it ubuntu1404. Now VirtualBox will probably choose the correct ‘Type’ and ‘Version’, but in case it doesn’t, you can set ‘Type’ to Linux and ‘Version’ to ‘Ubuntu (64 bit)’ manually.
Then press ‘Next’ to proceed.
The memory size depends on your host machine memory size. This is a very important step. You should allocate at least 1GB to as much as you can to smoothly run the virtual machine. However, make sure you leave enough memory for your host machine, which is very necessary. i.e, if you have total 8GB RAM, you can allocate 4GB to virtual, and leave 4GB for host. If you have got total 4GB, then allocate 1GB or 2GB for virtual.
In this case, my host machine has 12GB of physical RAM, so I would allocate 8192MB for the Ubuntu.
Accept the default ‘Create a virtual hard drive now’ and click ‘Create’ button.
Change the storage type from the default ‘Dynamically allocated’ to ‘Fixed size’ to increase performance.
You can also leave it dynamic, but it will be a little slow. The only advantage this option provides is, the virtual hard drive will only allocate the space that is being used. i.e, If you created hard drive of 15GB, and Ubuntu is using just 8GB then only 8GB of your physical hard drive will be consumed, and will increase when required.
By default VirtualBox selects the minimum space required, which is 8GB. Which is too small for actual usage of Ubuntu. You should increase it and set to at least 15GB.
We have got plenty of space, so I will choose 100GB.
Click ‘Create’ button and VirtualBox will generate Ubuntu virtual machine.
The virtual machine is created now! Now let us install the operating system.
Select the newly created virtual machine and Click ‘Settings’ button. Click on ‘Storage’ category and then ‘Empty’ under Controller:IDE. Click “CD/DVD” icon on right hand side and select the ubuntu ISO file to mount.
Make sure the VT-x/Virtualization Technology has been enabled in your computer’s BIOS/Basic Input Output System.
To take advantage of multiple processors or threads, you should specify a large number of processors. However, make sure the slider is in green zone. In my case i have a total of 8 cores, and I am allocating 4 cores because it is the largest value in the green bar.
Press ‘OK’ to proceed.
If a message about ‘Auto capture keyboard’ option. Read the message there and check ‘Do not show this message again’ option before clicking OK.
As the virtual machine starts, it boots the Ubuntu disc image, and now you will see a Welcome screen. Click ‘Install Ubuntu’ button to begin installation process.
Ubuntu doesn’t come with any third party software to play audio or video files because of some legal issues. You can check this option if you want.
Click ‘Continue‘ button.
Make sure ‘Erase disk and install Ubuntu‘ option is selected and click ‘Install Now‘ button.
Ubuntu will ask you a few questions. If the default is good, click ‘Continue‘ button.
When Ubuntu asks ‘Who are you?‘ enter your name, username, and password. This is user account will be the default account and will have all the root privileges. Click ‘Continue‘ button.
The installation will continue until it is finished.
After installation is complete, click ‘Restart Now‘ button. When you see a screen with a black background saying ‘Please remove installation media and close the tray (if any) then press ENTER:’, just follow it.
Enter the password you have chosen and press ‘Enter‘.
The Ubuntu Desktop OS is ready. You may find the desktop screen is too small. Don’t worry. You can solve this easily with “VirtualBox Guest Additions“.
